Starting a Conversation

This week the SCC faculty and staff community will begin having a real conversation about the potential of blogs and wikis as aids in our classrooms. I'm hoping each and every person who attends the initial sessions will come and visit and share their perceptions. While not all of us can or even need to incorporate these technologies in our classes, we at least need to be better aware of them.

In the initial workshop in August, several handouts were made available. These are now listed here:

7 things you should know about wikis

7 things you should know about blogs

7 things you should know about facebook

They all come from the Educause Learning Initiative website, which is a great web resource for those of us who are always trying to play "catch up" with technology.

I look forward to comments!

Jessie,

Very good presentation last Friday. I noticed a lot of people still seem scared of this new frontier. Copyright issues are always part of putting together a course in any format. Stuedent ettiquette is a problem even in a classroom environment as there are always individuals with issues of tact and mature mannerisms.

Hopefully, we will get a set of intelligent guidelines out of the committee overseeing this issue. Some people act like the computer has not been around in education for 20+ years.

Have a good day as I have to cut my thoughts short.

Hi Greg! After presenting on all 3 campuses, I was pretty impressed. The overall major response was pretty positive. A few had concerns as well, and that's ok. It's still new territory, but the main thing is to get started with both feet on the ground, and with support from administration.

Right now I think C. Butler has said 8 faculty have come forward saying they would like to pursue this further, and perhaps act as key resources as SCC progresses in terms to come. That's just too cool.
